A BYU budget is real. Tuition, rent, and a meal plan do not leave much for a weekly restaurant date. The fix is not skipping dates. It is picking plans that stay under $20 for both of you and still have a time, a place, and a little thought behind them.
The broader BYU and UVU guide is about creative student dates. This page is the budget version: what actually costs nothing, what costs a few dollars, and how to ask without making money the topic.
Free, and still a date
One BYU museum
Museum of Art, Bean Museum, Peoples and Cultures, or Paleontology. Pick one. Walk campus after. Cost: nothing.
Provo River Parkway or Rock Canyon
A 40-minute walk with a named turnaround. Bring a water bottle. Cost: nothing besides gas if you drive to the trailhead.
The Y, if you both want the workout
The trail is free. The view is the payoff. Go at a sane hour, bring water, and do not pitch this to someone who wanted a Creamery date.
Campus event or library date
Devotionals, student recitals, and the Provo City Library at Academy Square are free or close to it. Name the event, not "want to hang out on campus."
A few dollars, still under $20
Creamery split
Two scoops or one large and two spoons. Then walk. You can stay well under $20 and still hit the most famous first date in town.
Dirty soda and a park
A Swig or soda-shop run plus Kiwanis or the parkway. Cheap, public, and fast enough to fit between classes.
Farmers market share
On a Saturday in season, wander Pioneer Park, split one food-vendor item, and listen to whatever is playing. Set a dollar cap before you go.
Home picnic that looks planned
Sandwiches, a blanket, and Kiwanis or a canyon pullout. Groceries for two can stay under $20 if you keep it simple. The blanket and the time are what make it a date.
How to date on a student budget
Do not apologize for a cheap plan. Apologize for a vague one. "Bean Museum and the Creamery, Wednesday at 6, my treat" is confident. "This might be lame but…" is not.
Use midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday are cheaper in attention, if not in dollars, and they fit a student calendar. Save a nicer dinner for a later date so you have something to look forward to. If you want a place to post an under-$20 plan, Rove Dating is on the App Store with a 30-day free trial.
Post or request a plan like this on Rove
On Rove, every date starts as a specific plan. Here are a few plans inspired by this page. Men can post one like it, and women can browse and request the ones that sound fun.
- “Bean Museum, then the Creamery. Wednesday at 6. My treat.”
- “Parkway walk and dirty sodas. Tuesday at 7.”
- “Picnic at Kiwanis, I will pack it. Saturday at noon.”
Frequently asked questions
What are the cheapest good dates near BYU?
Free campus museums, the Y, the Provo River Parkway, a library date, and a Creamery or soda-shop stop. All of those can stay under $20.
Is an under-$20 first date okay at BYU?
Yes. A specific free or cheap plan usually lands better than an expensive vague one. Effort and clarity matter more than the receipt.
How is this different from the BYU and UVU date-ideas page?
That page is a mix of creative student dates. This one is strictly budget: plans that can stay under $20 without looking like you did not try.
