Hike Date Ideas in Utah County

Trail dates around Provo Canyon, Y Mountain, and the foothills, matched to effort level.

By the Rove Dating team · Updated October 7, 2026

Utah County is one of the easiest places in the country to turn a hike into a date. The foothills start at the edge of Provo, Provo Canyon is fifteen minutes from campus, and the Y on the mountain is visible from almost everywhere in the valley. The mistake is picking a trail that is too long, too steep, or too vague.

This page is hike-first. For lake sunsets, scenic drives, and tubing, see the outdoor dates near Provo guide. Here the question is simpler: which trail, how hard, and how do you ask?

Easy first-date hikes

Bridal Veil Falls and the parkway

The viewing area in Provo Canyon is a short walk from parking, then you can continue on the paved Provo River Parkway as far as you like. Normal shoes work. This is the default first hiking date for a reason.

Rock Canyon (short walk in)

The trailhead sits at the edge of northeast Provo. Walk into the canyon walls, watch climbers if they are on the rock, and turn around whenever you want. You do not have to go far for it to feel like you left town.

Squaw Peak Overlook

More of a viewpoint date than a hike: drive the Squaw Peak Road when it is open, walk the overlook, and take in Provo and Utah Lake. Check road status. It closes in winter.

The Y, Provo Canyon, and moderate trails

The Y trail

Short, steep switchbacks up to the block Y above BYU, with a wide view of the valley. It is a real workout. Go early or near sunset in summer, bring water, and only pitch this if you both already hike. It is a better second or third date than a first date with someone you have not met.

Stewart Falls

A popular hike to a two-tiered waterfall below Mount Timpanogos, usually from the Aspen Grove side near Sundance. Plan on a couple of hours and some elevation. Agree on shoes and water in the invite.

Battle Creek Falls

A short, steady climb from Kiwanis Park in Pleasant Grove to a waterfall that runs strongest in spring and early summer. Compact enough for a weeknight if you start before dinner.

Slate Canyon or the Bonneville Shoreline

Foothill trails on the east edge of Provo. Good when you want dirt underfoot without a full canyon drive. Say which trailhead and how far you have in mind.

How to plan a hiking date

Match the trail to the relationship. First dates should be short, public, and easy to abort: Bridal Veil Falls, a Rock Canyon stroll, or a parkway walk. Save the Y and Stewart Falls for when you know the other person wants a workout.

Be specific about the trailhead, the start time, what to bring, and a food stop after. "Stewart Falls Saturday at 9, burgers after, bring water and real shoes" is a plan. "Want to hike sometime?" is not. Check weather, heat, and road closures, and tell someone where you are going.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best first-date hike in Utah County?

Bridal Veil Falls plus a stretch of the Provo River Parkway. It is scenic, public, and easy to keep short. Rock Canyon is a close second.

Is hiking the Y a good first date?

Only if you both already like steep trails. For most first dates, pick something flatter and save the Y for later.

What should I bring on a hiking date?

Water, sturdy shoes, sun protection, a light layer, and a named food plan after. Share the trailhead and start time in the invite.
